Drive types at a glance
The right drive type depends on your door weight, garage layout, and noise tolerance. We discuss compatible options during the assessment.
Chain drive
- Works well for
- Widely available, compatible with most doors, lower upfront cost
- Consider if
- Louder operation — noticeable in attached garages or rooms above
- Note
- Most common on older installations
Belt drive
- Works well for
- Quieter than chain drive, smooth operation
- Consider if
- Generally higher cost than chain drive
- Note
- Popular choice when noise is a concern
Screw drive
- Works well for
- Fewer moving parts, moderate noise level
- Consider if
- Can be sensitive to temperature extremes
- Note
- Less common; confirm compatibility with your door
Direct drive
- Works well for
- Very quiet, only one moving part
- Consider if
- Higher cost; fewer compatible models
- Note
- Good option for attached garages with living space above
What we check during an opener visit
- Power supply and circuit to the opener unit
- Wall button function independent of the remote
- Remote battery, programming, and receiver response
- Keypad battery, code, and pairing
- Trolley carriage engagement and drive mechanism
- Safety sensor alignment, cleanliness, and indicator lights
- Safety reversal function — door must reverse on contact
- Whether a mechanical issue (spring, cable, track) is preventing movement
We explain what we find before recommending a repair or replacement. If the opener is repairable and parts are available, we quote the repair. If replacement makes more sense, we explain why and discuss compatible options.
Safety functions are part of the service
A door that closes unpredictably or does not reverse correctly needs attention. Stop operating it and arrange an inspection. After approved work, the technician checks the opener’s applicable safety functions using the manufacturer’s procedure. Routine owner checks should follow your specific model’s manual and should never be attempted on a visibly damaged or unstable door.
Do not bypass or disconnect safety sensors. Do not attempt to adjust spring tension or cables as part of opener troubleshooting.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
My opener runs but the door doesn't move. What's happening?
The most common cause is a disconnected trolley carriage — the part that connects the opener to the door. This can happen if the emergency release cord was pulled. Other causes include a broken spring or cable preventing the door from moving, or a mechanical obstruction. We diagnose the actual cause during the visit.
How do I know if I need a new opener or just a repair?
Age, parts availability, and the nature of the fault all factor in. A logic board failure on a 15-year-old opener may not be worth repairing if compatible parts are hard to source. We explain what we found and give you the information to decide.
Can I keep my existing opener when I get a new door?
Usually yes, as long as the opener is in good working condition and compatible with the new door's weight and size. We check this during the estimate. If the opener is underpowered for the new door, we'll let you know.
What horsepower do I need?
Most standard single-car steel doors work with a 1/2 HP opener. Heavier doors — two-car, solid wood, or insulated steel — may need 3/4 HP or more. We confirm the right specification for your door during the assessment.
Do you program remotes and keypads after installation?
Yes. Programming is part of the installation. We also walk you through the safety reversal test and explain how to use the manual release before we leave.
